Ready to make your lawn great again?
Most homeowners desire to have a green, healthy and beautiful lawn. But lawn maintenance is not as simple as mowing and blowing, it involves a lot of other things too.
Mowing as what most people always do to maintain a lawn great and healthy. Mowing is done to break down and feed the beneficial microbes in the soil. When you mow, it is best not to remove more than one-third of the height of the grass and keep the lawn 3 to 4 inches high.
After mowing, you will notice that there are areas the mower cannot reach such as tree tips and uneven masonry edges or boulders. You need to do an edging which is cutting the grass from edges with the use of a string hammer.
The moisture level of the lawn is also important to ensure that your lawn is neither soggy nor dry. Changes in the weather have a great impact on how much water is needed even if you have an automatic water sprinkler, it is better to determine the watering needs of your lawn.
In order to have a thick, healthy lawn, it is better to have your lawn fertilized. Fertilizing your lawn will also help to make it looking green.
Liming is done to keep the soil pH in the right range. For instance, turf grass requires a pH of 6.5 to 7 to utilize the soil nutrients. However, if the soil has a lot of moss, it means your soil is acidic for turf.
To relieve compaction and break down thatch, aeration or coring is required to remove plugs of soil from the lawn. Most of the time, after aeration is done, a lawn care expert will rake compost over the lawn and then apply fall fertilizer or sprinkle lawn seed to refresh thin areas.
A buildup of dead leaves and stems along the soil surface or thatch will prevent the water to penetrate fully, so a dethatching must be done. Using a dethatching machine with vertical blades can cut out to loosen the thatch layer.
Another way of retaining the moisture and encouraging earthworms to aerate the soil naturally and give a slow trickle of nutrients, is applying compost to your lawn. Although you can apply compost anytime, most lawn care professionals do it at the same time as aeration and over seeding.
A healthy lawn does not have weeds and pests. The best way to get rid of weeds and pests is to cultivate the lawn with a thick stand of turf grass. However, there are several products in the market that can be used to treat disease or insect problems, but don’t forget to read all the instructions carefully to avoid harm to your family, pets and other wildlife.
But in order to do all this you need a lot of time, a lot of different tools and a lot of experience.
